Interpretive Notes
The squat, sturdy shape of this beaker and the liveliness of its decoration are typical of the Baroque style of northern Europe in the late 17th century. The technique, however, is still reminiscent of Renaissance glassmaking, which was characterized by fragile, thinly blown vessels and linear decoration. At about the time this beaker was decorated, a new type of glass was introduced in central Europe. It allowed for thick-walled, crystal-clear vessels that were deeply cut and engraved with rich decoration.
Physical DescriptionBeaker. Clear glass of grayish tinge; free-blown, diamond-point scratch engraved. Broad, straight-sided cylindrical form, rounded at bottom; slightly concave base with small rough pontil mark; decoration: three pyramided dots edging flower and scrolled-leaf narrow band at top of broad central band having parrots perched on branches, parrots or parakeets in flight and date "1680." on obverse and, on reverse, large parrot on branch and between large stylized flowers; flower and scroll-leaf narrow band at bottom of central band.
