Interpretive Notes
Small richly decorated bottles with large elaborately cut stoppers flourished in northern Bohemia beginning in the 1930s. Capitalizing on the region’s reputation for producing luxury glass often used by European aristocracy, Bohemian glassmakers exported their products to the United States, where women were experiencing increasing independent economic power. Companies such Irving W. Rice & Co. in New York City marketed these bottles as aspirational luxury items for a woman's private quarters.
