Interpretive Notes
The Bakewell exhibit at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia featured pressed glass and a blown and cut lead glass compote. The Bakewell firm had been famous for this type of cut glass earlier in the century. The company received the prize medal for this display.
Physical DescriptionBrownish gilded bronze, leather; struck by hand from a die. Flat circular medallion with seated Roman goddess extending a laurel wreath on obverse in front of Centennial buildings, four smaller classical figures around rim; reverse has "INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION/ AWARDED BY/UNITED STATES/CENTENNIAL COMMISSION/ PHILADELPHIA MDCCCLXXVI". Square brown leather case lined with rose velvet with circular depression for medal; lid of case is missing.
