Interpretive Notes
With John Monteith Gates, the sculptor Sidney Waugh developed a modern yet classical style for the new Steuben colorless glass. The first Gazelle Bowls were engraved by the master engraver Joseph Libisch (1886–1964).
Physical DescriptionBowl, "Gazelle Bowl". Colorless lead glass; blown, cut, copper-wheel engraved and polished. (a) Heavy spherical shape, with lipless rim; mid-section decorated, with a band of twelve deeply intaglio engraved (unpolished) overlapping gazelles with articulated musculature and varying head and body placement forming an undulating line; gazelles placed between two bands of double v-cut and polished lines; rounded base, with polished pontil; diamond point inscribed in script just above lower cut bands: "Sidney Waugh"; (b) heavy, circular shape notched to form a cross; upper surface has been cut and ground into a dished support; thick sides taper in towards top, decorated on protruding edges, near base, with three parallel horizontal rows of v-cuts; base ground and polished flat; inscribed in script near edge of one quadrant: "Steuben".
