Interpretive Notes
This monumental cut glass vase may have been exhibited in 1829 at the First Industrial Exhibition in St. Petersburg, which presented the works of Russian manufactories. It was praised at the time “for its noble form, its color, and the high quality of its ormolu mounts.” A second vase of this type is in the State History Museum in Moscow.
Physical DescriptionGold-ruby, colorless glasses, bronze, gilding; blown, overlaid, tooled, applied, cut, polished, cast, gilded, adhered, assembled. The vase has a narrow flaring neck with ormolu mounted rim, followed by a band of horizontal rings, a diamond pattern around the shoulder, and a band of diamond-cut zigzags. The lower part of the vessel is decorated with deep vertical fluting. The two glass scroll handles with cut floral decorations in the center of the volutes are attached to the body by ormolu fixtures in the shape of neoclassical masks. It has a flaring ormolu foot which is mounted on a cut glass plinth on an ormolu base with disk-shaped feet.
