Interpretive Notes
This bracelet is made of two types of glass—red glass overlaying colorless snowflake glass. The snowflake glass base was made by adding white inclusions and air bubbles to translucent glass, creating the effect of falling snow. The red glass overlay was carved away, leaving the raised symbols which typically represent longevity and luck. On her 60th birthday, Empress Cixi (1835–1908) of China ordered bracelets like this one for her courtiers to wear as a celebration of her life and good fortune.
Physical DescriptionBracelet (霏雪地套紅玻璃壽字紋手鐲). Transparent colorless "camphor" or "snowflake" glass with red overlay; cast (?), cased, cameo-carved. Circlet as a flat band, encircled by repeats of two alternating longevity symbols cut in the red overlay; rims rounded.
