Interpretive Notes
What is the origin of the perfume spray bottle? Dr. Allen DeVilbiss originally invented atomizers in 1887 to deliver medicine and anesthetics directly to his patients’ nose and throat. He later founded the DeVilbiss Company, which adapted this technology to perfume sprays, becoming the first American manufacturer of “perfumizers.” DeVilbiss is still in business today but has replaced its sensuous and feminine atomizers with automotive spray paint guns.
Physical DescriptionOpaque white, transparent pink and orange glass; blown, tooled, applied iridescence, assembled; metal collar, fabric atomizer. Wide foot that narrows to thin stem then widens slightly to metal collar.
