Interpretive Notes
This brooch was assembled in the twentieth or twenty-first century with a modern silicone adhesive and is not an authentic representation of Leopold’s work. Leopold Blaschka made the individual glass flowers on the brooch and the wooden structure is also of the nineteenth century. But the use of silicone means this was constructed (or perhaps reassembled) after Leopold and Rudolf Blaschkas’ lifetimes. It is likely that the silicone was not used to simply repair the brooch; Leopold’s jewelry pattern card at the Harvard University Herbaria (1998-G-5.21) indicate a more refined floral arrangement than that of this object.
