Interpretive Notes
Vasa diatreta is the Latin name for the ancient Roman openwork glass vessels known as cage cups. The British designer Frederick Carder (1863–1963), who was the first design director at Steuben Glass in Corning, used the term “diatreta” as Randal uses it, referring to an openwork glass vessel made by lost wax casting. Randal saw the Museum’s Roman cage cup, as well as Carder’s versions of the ancient technique, and he was inspired to make this complex vessel.
