Interpretive Notes
In 1907, the jewelry designer René Lalique was approached by the famous perfumer François Coty to design a label for a perfume bottle. As the story goes, Lalique was insulted by this task, and instead offered to design the whole bottle. The idea of developing a unique vessel for a specific fragrance was completely new at the time and set Lalique on the path of designing iconic glass bottles for several French perfumers, some of which are also on display here.
Physical DescriptionCoty Perfume Bottle with Stopper, "Coty - 2, Cyclamen". Colorless glass, patina; mold-blown, mold-pressed, acid-etched, applied patina. (Aa) Tappering six-sided mold-blown bottle with short cylindrical neck and flange rim. Design of fairy-like nude female with long wings pulling down flower on long stem as if to smell it. (Ab) Mold-pressed stopper: cylindrical shank with acid-etched surface, flaring to circular disk finial with design of cyclamen and "COTY" above "CYCLAMEN" in center and "PARIS" below. Lime green patina applied to designs on bottle.
