Interpretive NotesFriendship goblets with two figures were common in The Netherlands in the 1700s, and typically celebrated alliances and business partnerships between men. However, on this example the shared gaze of the female figures and their intimately joined hands suggest devotion or desire. The flaming heart, symbolic of eternal love, and the smoldering altar suggest a more profound bond than any work-based relationship.
The imagery may reference friendship, but it is also unmistakably “sapphic,” referencing the life and work of the ancient Greek female poet Sappho who was famous for her homoerotic lyric verses. Her work was well known in Europe at this time.
