Physical DescriptionLarge Deckelpokal with Monogram of George I. Colorless glass; blown, applied, cut, engraved, ground. (a) Colorless glass, flat base, pontil-mark removed by grinding. The upper surface engraved with a two-part ornamental pattern. Between mereses faceted baluster stem with globular knop. The lower part of the bell-shaped bowl embellished with cut olives. The front of the bowl decorated with jumping horse on landscape socle (Welfenroß) and inscription: ‘Auf dem Fürstlichen Schlosse zu Blankenburg’ (‘On the Princely Castle at Blankenburg’) in matte engraving. On the reverse crowned mirror monogram "GL" (Georg Ludwig of Brunswick-Lüneburg as George I of Great Britain and Ireland). (b) The original domed cover with faceted knop and finial decorated with a four-part ornamentation on shoulder.

Between 5th and 15th October 2005 Sotheby’s auctioned off the entire private estate of Castle Marienburg (Hanover), Lower Saxony, Germany, which was the property of the Hanoverian royal family. At this October 2005 Sotheby’s sale, Kovacek Spiegelgasse Glas of Vienna acquired the goblet.
