Interpretive Notes
Pesce is an architect, artist, and designer who has undertaken diverse commissions in architecture, urban planning, interior and exhibition design, industrial design, and publishing. He has designed objects ranging from flower vases to furniture in a variety of materials, and he is known for his asymmetrical forms and unrestrained use of color. This vessel, which was difficult to make without breaking, is intentionally primitive-looking. Pesce leaves in place the tubelike sprues, which are used in the casting process, to show how the vessel is constructed. By leaving the rim uneven and the surface seemingly rough, he subverts the meticulous finishing processes that are characteristic of well-crafted objects.
Physical DescriptionYellow and black glass, pate de verre casting. Sculptural vessel with four flattened sides that rests on three pipe-like supports; the supports extend from the interior of the bowl to the exterior. This is an interpretation of a bowl that is, intentionally, deconstructed and primitive looking. The designer has integrated the sprues used in the pâte de verre technique into his design.
