Interpretive Notes
Ayala Serfaty’s light sculptures are made of glass filaments encased in a polymer membrane. The handmade Italian glass filaments are shaped and fused with a torch in Serfaty’s studio in Tel Aviv, Israel. The finished glass structures are sprayed with a clear polymer developed in the late 1940s by the U.S. military to protect ships in long-term storage. The result is a study in contrasts: industrial material used to make a skin-like membrane that suggests organic natural forms.
Physical DescriptionSculpture, "Soma 2015". Borosilicate glass rods, fused and flameworked; covered with a sprayed-on polymer membrane. The sculpture is illuminated with an LED lighting source located inside of the multi-part structure. Thin glass filaments are woven to produce spatial structures that are ultimately sprayed with a polymer to generate a skin-like layer, or membrane.
