Interpretive Notes
The vase is inscribed: “The cowslip is a country lass, The violet is a nun / But I will woo the dainty rose, The Queen of Every One.” These lines are from “Flowers,” a poem by the British writer Thomas Hood (1799–1845).
Physical DescriptionOpaque peach shading to yellow glass; blown, tooled, applied, enameled. Teardrop shaped vase with rounded body that narrows to cylindrical neck. The vase is decorated with enameled garland and rose with poem in the center. "The cowslip is a country a country lass, / The violet is a nun, - / But I will woo the dainty rose, / The queen of every one. / Thomas Hood" Acid-etched "satin" finish, polished pontil mark.
