Interpretive Notes
The people who ordered these glasses must have been prosperous. They could afford a specially inscribed piece. Unfortunately, the names are quite common. We do not know who ordered the tumblers.
Physical DescriptionTumbler. Clear glass with few bubbles; free blown and gilded; body with sides tapering downwards, slightly concave base with rough pontil mark; on upper body a wide golden ribbon with ends loosely scrolled, outlined in dark blue and bearing the name "Mary Russel", below the ribbon an eight-petaled blossom, gilded rim outlined in blue.
