Interpretive Notes
The goblet was a gift from Carolina Amelung to her friend, Metha Repold. It is inscribed and dated 1792.
Physical DescriptionGoblet. Non-lead glass, colorless of grayish cast; free-blown and engraved; semi-oviform bowl, applied short stem in form of large inverted baluster with large tear, applied domed foot with plain rim, rough pontil mark; engraved decoration: on one side in script, "C. Amelung" within a typical Amelung floral and foliated wreath, and, on the other, in two lines in script, "Metha Repold d. 16. Octo. 1792" within elaborate wreath with floral, grain, leaf and scroll motifs.
