Interpretive Notes
This dagger head might tell us a lot about the individual who used it. The tiger is an animal feared in the wild, and the owner of this pommel, which would have been attached to the end of a dagger handle, may have been feared in the same way. It was intricately carved, and it mirrors the tiger imagery seen in royal furnishings of Tipu Sultan (1750–1799), known as the Tiger of Mysore, the kingdom in Southern India over which he ruled.
Physical DescriptionDagger Pommel in the Shape of a Tiger's Head. Deep black-amethyst glass; carved. Deep black-amethyst color solid glass pommel from a dagger depicting a carved and finely detailed head of a tiger.
