Interpretive NotesIf you look closely at the surfaces of the plate glass, you will find photographs from the January 6, 2021, protests at the US Capitol; an original poem about power, time, and resistance; and fragmented quotes from the former US President Donald Trump’s address to the nation following the attempted coup.
Charisse Pearlina Weston uses glass as a canvas for complex ideas. In her work, she hides parts of images and text, symbolizing the concept of “holding back” information. This technique is a nod to tactics used in Black political resistance, encouraging viewers to delve deeper into the meaning behind what's visible and what's hidden while also keeping some information private. Weston hopes that her work will remind viewers to question their assumptions about what influences their daily lives.
