Physical DescriptionGilt-bronze and brass, colorless glass and coral; bronze cast; glass beads coiled; coral cut; wrapping of rod, repousse. Intricate hanging canopy form consisting of: (a) basic three-section brass rod with hook at either end; wrapped with one coiled bronze band of units suggesting a dragon form, and two coiled bands of wave pattern; (b) two inverted eight-lobed gilt-bronze lotus blossom forms with low-relief design, surmounting upper two arrangements of "c"; (c) three canopy arrangements, slightly differing in both lengths and units, consisting of a heavy gilt-bronze eight-lobed unit with low relief cloud motifs on stippled ground; from a perforation in each lobe depends a chain of pendants and beads: (1) upper canopy chains: three flat, openwork gilt-bronze forms, alike on both faces, interspersed with units of two colorless, and one bronze bead; subsidiary pendants of one coral bead and a small bronze form; (2) middle canopy chains: same pendant forms at top and bottom, with addition of a flat openwork "Wheel of the Law" form, a tripartite form, beads and subsidiary pendants as in (1); (3) similar, but longer and more complex, with the addition of a chrysanthemum and leaves openwork form, a second tripartite unit and alternating terminal pendants of an open bell form and a closed bell form; beads and subsidiary pendants as in (1) and (2).Provenance
