Physical DescriptionTranslucent opalescent milk glass, bluish in reflected light and ambertinted in transmitted light. Blown, engraved, cold-painted, silvered, gilded. Tankard: straight-sided cylindrical body, slightly flared at base, with slightly domed bottom and rough pontil mark. Applied hollow earshaped handle, lower end of which is folded upward. On body, engraved decoration highlighted in gold and silver, with green and red-yellow lacquers: gilded mirror monogram “JSB,” with olive wreath and fivepointed open coronet, enclosed in silver strapwork frame that is flanked by two flowerpots and surrounded by golden tendrils and symmetrical flower and leaf sprays. Handle cracked at lower joint; part missing. Colored decoration is partly worn away; silvering is tarnished. Concentric scratches inside beaker (at rim and about 1.5 cm below) indicate former presence of lid, which is now lost.Provenance
