Interpretive NotesThis bottle and others like it often contain powdered remnants of perfume. Glassmakers created the graceful bird shape by manipulating a glass bubble at the furnace. The bottle was filled with perfume and sealed over the fire. To use the perfume, its owner would crack the bird’s tail and reseal it after each use.
