Interpretive Notes
This bottle and others like it often contain powdered remnants of perfume. Glassmakers created the graceful bird shape by manipulating a glass bubble at the furnace. The bottle was filled with perfume and sealed over the fire. To use the perfume, its owner would crack the bird’s tail and reseal it after each use.
Physical DescriptionTransparent light blue glass; blown. Container in the form of a bird; long narrow beak inclined upwards; head and neck are represented by single tubular element which merges with plump, stylized body; long, tapering tail.
