Physical DescriptionPolycandelon with Three Lamps. Colorless (a,b); almost colorless, with yellowish green tint (c); blown (glass); cast, manipulated (metal). Polycandelon consisting of (d) copper alloy hanger, three chains, and perforated disk, and (a-c) three glass lamps. (d) Hanger is hollow conical object with, at top, vertical flange with circular perforation and, at bottom, three tapering arms which extend out and down, and have perforations at lower ends, alternating with three smaller arms without perforations; each chain consists of twenty-two links made by bending wire to produce two loops, one at 90° to other; disk has openwork pattern consisting of two concentric circles connected by three small circles alternating with three radial struts which have perforated vertical flanges at outer ends; inner circle contains Maltese cross; outer circle has inner edge with one small, tooth-shaped projection on each side of all three struts and outer edge with sixteen pairs of small triangular projections alternating with sixteen scallops. (a) Lamp: beaker-shaped, with hollow stem. Rim plain, with rounded lip; wall tapers, then straightens, curving in at bottom; floor flat; stems tapers and terminates in solid bulb. (b) Lamp: beaker-shaped, with hollow stem. Rim plain, with rounded lip; wall tapers, then straightens, curving in at bottom; floor pushed in from below; stem tapers and terminates in solid bulb which has been flattened at bottom. (c) Lamp: beaker-shaped, with hollow stem. Rim plain, with rounded lip made by folding in and down; wall tapers, then straightens, curving in at bottom; floor pushed in from below; stem tapers and terminates in solid bulb.Provenance
