Interpretive Notes
The scene on this goblet shows two gentlemen toasting each other with "a glass of friendship," as the inscription reads. The decoration indicates the purpose of the glass. It may have been used as a welcome goblet, but it probably refers to a specific friendship. Diamond-point engraving on glass was frequently practiced by amateurs, who produced objects to commemorate special occasions. [Compare 79.3.301 and 79.3.239.]
Physical DescriptionClear glass with slight grey tinge; free-blown and diamond-point engraved. Plain folded conical foot with rough pontil mark, squat hollow inverted baluster stem flanked by two stemmed mereses, round funnel bowl; on the bowl two gentlemen toasting each other, the left sitting on a chair and the other one standing, below rim the calligraphic inscription: "Een Glasie Van Vrienschap" (a glass of friendship); on the foot two flower sprays.
