Physical DescriptionAlmost colorless, with yellowish tinge. Blown; applied, linear-cut. Cup. Wide, flaring mouth with beveled rim; narrow, sloping shoulder with rounded edge; wall bulges to greatest diameter near midpoint, then curves down and in; base has shallow foot-ring made by tooling; annular pontil mark (D. about 1.6 cm). Handle, with circular cross section, dropped onto wall at midpoint, drawn up and out and in, and attached to outside of rim; just below highest point, rectangular thumb-piece made from separate bit. Unpolished wheel-cut decoration on outside of mouth and wall. On mouth: band of ornament that occupies about two-thirds of circumference and is interrupted by handle, consisting of horizontal line below row of nine crescents with contiguous, upward-pointing tips. On wall: broad band of ornament that occupies more than three-quarters of circumference and is interrupted by handle, consisting of three panels of equal size bordered by two continuous horizontal lines at top and one continuous horizontal line at bottom; outer panels almost identical, each containing two registers divided by two horizontal lines, with two hatched circular motifs separated by scroll in upper register and band of chevrons in lower register; panel at center contains indeterminate motifs, possibly pseudo-epigraphic, and assorted crescents and short lines; at ends of band, upper border lines descend in S- and reversed S-shaped curves, then meet below lower attachment of handle.
