Physical DescriptionPatch Box with Lid. Colorless glass, metal alloy; polished, reverse-gilded, painted. Flat, circular form, (a) the cover with slightly convex polished glass, decorated on the reverse with a finely detailed scene in gilding, backed with black, of a nude female reclining on a blanket and pillow, while a putto attempts to kiss her; another putto flies overhead, dropping flowers from a basket; two other putti flying to the left, one carrying a torch and a floral wreath, while the other drops a wreath over the torch; a bow and quiver of arrows lies on the ground alongside the female figure; a rock alongside inscribed "Villers"; mounted in a stamped gilt frame, with zigzag borders; gilt metal lining on the rim; tortoiseshell sides and inner disk. (b) Base, with gilt metal collar, scratched "BUMM 7112A"; stamped gilt metal frame on the bottom, matching that on (a); tortoiseshell sides and bottom.Provenance
