This is an example of one of Dale Chihuly's best-known series - the "Venetians". This ongoing series pays homage to historical Venetian glass, which is an important inspiration to glassmakers today. Chihuly is an internationally celebrated personality in contemporary art and design whose prominence in the field of studio glass is unmatched. From the beginning of his involvement with glass in the 1960s, Chihuly has focused on the sculptural qualities of the material, using the blown vessel as a vehicle for the exploration of color and form

Physical DescriptionColorless, cadmium yellow-orange non-lead glass, iridized black, metallic gold leaf; blown with hot applications, manipulated while hot. Heavy ovoid shape of colorless glass, with overall yellow-orange mottling; thick rim wrap, with gold flecks; narrow base, with thick foot wrap of black overlaid with band of gold leaf; spiraling from deep inside opening and cascading over rim are thick ribbed spirals, with "candy cane" striping of iridized steel-blue and black; within spirals emerge four large lily-shaped "flowers" of black overlaid, with colorless and deep red with interiors overlaid with gold leaf; rough pontil; inscribed in script near base wrap: "Chihuly 90".
