Physical DescriptionOpaque white glass; enameled; wood, metal. Ebonized (black- painted) wood cabinet of rectangular section with bell-shaped top, molded base, and central recession holding three drawers; the recession flanked with drawers; mounted with 24 enameled opaque white glass plaques, framed with (mid-19th century) floral-stamped gilt metal borders: sides of the cabinet with arched glass panels decorated with female figures seated on shell-backed thrones, and bearing the arms of France beneath a coronet, the corners set with curved plaques decorated with realistically enameled floral sprays; the plaques on the front of the cabinet, on the recessed central drawers, (on the drawers above and below the recession, and on the top decorated with rustic scenes; (mid 19th-century) gilt metal pulls on the drawers flanking the recession; sliding wood bars lock the side, top and bottom drawers; the top of the cabinet and a section of molding slide to the right to reveal a rectangular parchment (or paper) and silk-lined rectangular compartment; an arched door was originally on the front of the cabinet, covering the recessed drawers.Provenance
