Interpretive Notes
Although North Americans often use this term for masculine scents, “eau de cologne” simply refers to a substance with a lighter ratio of perfume oils to alcohol than traditional perfume or eau de toilette. To house this more diluted fragrance, glass and perfume manufacturers often created larger bottles. The engraved silver overlay on this pair was personalized with its owner’s initials, “A. M.”
Physical DescriptionPair of Cologne Bottles with Silver Overlay. Red and green lead glass, silver; blown, hand-worked, chased. (A) Flat-sided body of red glass with sloping shoulders and straight neck flaring rim covered with silver, ground and polished pontil mark on flat base, mouth, neck, and most of body covered with silver overlay engraved with scrolls and monogram "A.M." Matching hollow blown stopper of red glass is pointed at top and has a colorless glass solid shank; top portion is also silver overlay. Both parts are acid-etched "23". (B) Identical to A, but glass is light green and both parts are acid-etched "6".
