Interpretive Notes
These particular inlays are extremely complicated and are made in bars of half faces. Glassmakers then used these half faces to form complete, symmetrical faces by combining two slices from the same cane, one of which was simply reversed.
Physical DescriptionHalf of Mosaic Plaque with Maenad. Translucent medium grey-blue glass, pitted with canes of opaque white, opaque red, opaque yellow, transparent amethyst and transparent green glass; mosaic glass or millefiori technique, cut and polished recently. Section of grey-blue cane with half of a female head, face modeled in white with amethyst eye and mouth, features delineated in grey-blue, lips and hair in brick-red with vine leaves and grapes in green outlined with yellow, small filet of green with yellow outline separates forehead from hair.
