Interpretive Notes
This decanter was likely used aboard the yacht America, which was built in 1851. The vessel competed in a race in England that year, winning a silver trophy that became known as the America’s Cup. This prize is now awarded to the winner of the international yachting match that is also known as the America’s Cup.
Physical DescriptionColorless lead glass; blown, tooled, cut, polished, engraved. Cylindrical body with long neck (ground and polished for stopper) and everted top rim which is shaped by cutting; neck is cut into 6 vertical flutes, three of which extend completely to base and three of which end at shoulder, above cut loop designs; one long panel has an engraved inscription "THIS DECANTER/WAS ABOARD/THE YACHT/AMERICA/IN HER RACE/FOR THE CUP/IN/1851"; 12 pointed star cut on base. (b) Hollow ovoid stopper cut into 6 panels with a star cut on top and a cylindrical shaft ground and polished to fit neck of decanter.
