The enameled decoration on this communal beer glass depicts the Ancient Greek and Roman god, Apollo, as patron of Music and Poetry. He is seated on Mount Parnassus in Greece, the mythological home of the Muses.

Physical DescriptionClear glass with bubbles and impurities and slight grey tinge; free-blown with latticinio decoration, enameled and gilded. Slender cylindrical slightly tapering at bottom where it is joined by the high pedestal foot with underfolded rim, base of body pushed up, with very rough pontil mark; vessel and foot have white, vertical latticinio stripes with plain ones alternating with ribbons in a lace pattern; enamel decoration: the scene on the vessel shows Mount Parnassus; in the center is Apollo, seated and nude except for a large piece of cloth over his lap and legs, playing a large yellow viola-like instrument with a bow, above him a tree with blue trunk; the inscription in blue flanking Apollo and the tree reads: "LAURUS OBUMBRANS APOLLO"; the right side is divided into five sections, starting at the bottom with a bearded man clad in a brown coat and riding on a horse proceeding to the left, holding a large pitcher in his right hand, beside him the inscription: "Syllenus"; above another man clad in a brown coat and sleeping on a strip of grass; above him two trees from which two half figures of boys emerge, the inscriptions reading: "OREADES DRIADES"; on the next level are four nude young men with horned caps playing different kinds of trumpets, the left one playing the bagpipe; on the top a pavilion around which two dogs pursue a stag, on top a man (?) clad in a blue coat, having a crescent on his head and holding a long spear in his left hand; to the left of the central group a large golden fountain in the shape of a stemmed cup, with the front part of a white horse with blue and brown wings appearing from the left; above a group of eight apparently male figures clad in yellow, blue and white, playing different instruments and having wreaths on their heads; behind them a white pavilion with small figure of a man or girl clad in blue.
