Interpretive Notes
About 1927, Pierre Weissenburger, a winemaker in the medieval town of Obernai in Alsace, commissioned Lalique to design glassware for his wine. The molded inscription on this decanter, reads, “Le Vin du Clos Ste. Odile Rejouit les Coeurs” (The wine from the Sainte Odile vineyard makes hearts rejoice).

Physical DescriptionDecanter with Stopper, "Sainte-Odile". Colorless glass, orangish-brown patina; mold-blown decanter, mold-pressed stopper, acid-etched, applied patina. (a) Rectangular decanter with narrow neck with three rings. Exterior of vessel decorated with a circular medallion on front with figure of woman wearing a religious habit and holding a book to her chest. Halo encompasses woman's head. Brown patina applied to decoration. (b) Stopper with slightly flattened spherical top decorated with small raised dots.
