Friedrich Egermann developed new enamels and painting brushes to achieve the fine details seen in these hand-painted butterflies and insects. The clear, heavy, and faceted glass of this bottle, typical of this region and time, spotlights the delicate and detailed painting. What kind of perfume would insects be most attracted to?

Physical DescriptionClear heavy glass; slight wear marks; free-blown, cut, enameled and gilded. (a) Hexagonal foot with flat base and curved top, hexagonal body consisting of a lower part flaring towards the cover-like curved top supporting the neck with flaring rim; (b) slightly conical stopper with finial consisting of a paneled and flaring lower part and a hexagonal cone; multicolored butterflies on the panels of foot and top of body, insects on the finial; rim of neck and finial gilded, on top of finial a gilded leaf-motif.
