Interpretive Notes
The French Nieuport 17 fighter biplane on this plaque was introduced in 1916 and deployed during World War One. After the war, the Nieuport 17 was used for training fighter pilots. Designed in 1933, this plaque may have been intended to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the French pilot Henri Farman’s successful one-kilometer flight in 1908.
Physical DescriptionIlluminated Plaque, "Avion biplan (Biplane)". (a) Colorless glass; mold-pressed, assembled. Solid rectangular plaque with image of biplane. (b) Two-tiered silver chrome base with four feet and glass insert. Base outfitted with electrical wiring and two light bulb sockets.
