Interpretive Notes
The flower etched on this pair of vases is a night-blooming crenate orchid cactus, Epiphyllum crenatum. Although it is of Mexican origin, specimens were cultivated in the Saint Petersburg Botanical Garden from the 1820s. Nature was a common theme in Art Nouveau objects. The Imperial Porcelain and Glass Factory in Saint Petersburg, Russia had adopted the Art Nouveau style by the 1890s.
Physical Description2 Vases. Colorless lead glass; blown, engraved. Slightly waisted cylindrical thick-walled vases. Exterior of vases decorated with engraved naturalistic botanical motifs representing the leaves and blooms of the Epiphyllum crenatum cactus.
Provenance
Source Jill Fenichell, Incorporated - 2017-02-24
From Jill Fenichell: "In the home of a couple who have lived in Westchester since the 1980s, they bought them at the Hartford Antiques Show (Hartford, CT) from a dealer now deceased, his name was Adam Levine. Purchase was roughly 1978-1984. I cannot conjecture on the vase whereabouts after the Revolution, except to say that many Russians who escaped went to Paris, then to N.Y." Jill Fenichell has provided a certificate from the Art Loss Register.
