Interpretive Notes
It may not be obvious to viewers now that this five-piece set was conceived as a “scent machine” for the home. The central vessel is meant to hold potpourri, a medley of fresh seasonal flowers and spices. It is flanked by two candle holders, then by two flower vases. The entire apparatus placed on a mantlepiece would have diffused blooming fragrances across a large room, delighting guests and hosts.
Physical DescriptionFive-Piece Garniture Set. Five cobalt blue vases with facet cut bodies. They comprise a central, straight-sided pot pourri vase, wider at the neck than at the foot, with a glass and gilt-bronze cover over a fretwork frieze encircled by a gilt-bronze laurel wreath; a pair of "cassolettes formant bougeoirs" (small, ovoid pot pourri vases with a gilt-bronze fretwork frieze around the rim and lids of the same, which invert to form candle holders) and two taller, bottle-shaped vases with long, flaring necks of gilt-bronze. All five vases stand on circular, white marble bases encircled with beads, and are supported on console legs with either scroll or ram’s hoof feet. The mounts are adorned with swags of beads, and the handles formed of winged female busts or female bacchantes. The three central pot pourri vases have gilt-bronze fretwork friezes and their covers have gilt-bronze knops of stylized acanthus leaves.

Former Collection Jacques Lenté - 1946
Collection of Lucien Laveissière, then by descent - Lucien Jean Joseph Laveissière (b.1860, Château de La Folie, Draveil; d.1939) was married to Agathe Delahalle (b.1870, Paris; d.1946), they lived in Paris at 68, rue Pergolèse. The couple remained childless, and Mme Lucien Laveissière offered a bequest to the state of France on condition that her home, at 68, rue Pergolèse (hotel particulier Villa Saïd), was converted into a museum. This was not accepted by the government. But her nephew Jacques Lenté, who inherited their possessions in 1946 - presented some 40 pictures to the Louvre (mainly eighteenth-century French portraits; lit.: Les Donateurs du Louvre, Paris, 1989) and other french museums (such as the musée d'Orsay) in 1947. Those donations are all marked as “en souvenir de M. et Mme Lucien Laveissière.”
