Physical DescriptionCopy of Guido Reni’s "Aurora". Multicolored enamel, stain, glass, wood; stained, enamel painted. Large enameled glass painting depicting a mythological scene of Aurora leading Apollo in the Chariot of the Sun, bringing daylight to the world. At left, blonde Apollo with exposed chest, a purple garment covering below his waist and billowing behind, holding the reins of four white horses. Above, winged infant bearing a torch (Phosphorus, from the Greek φωσφόρος, "torch-bearer"). The chariot is obscured by seven women (possibly the Hours) in colorful gowns, who hold hands and walk on white clouds while escorting Apollo. Aurora, at right, in billowing dress holding wreaths of flowers and surrounded by clouds of darkness, flies over a mountainous seaside landscape, dark but for a hint of sunrise over the water to the left.Provenance
