Interpretive NotesThe High Altitude Large Optics (HALO) telescope mirror is made from ULE (TM) glass. Although changes in temperature won't distort it, the mirror is too thin to be totally rigid. Hundreds of actuators - small, computer-controlled "feet" - are needed to support and focus it. Zero-expansion materials, such as ULE (TM) glass, along with computer controls, have made large telescopes like the HALO possible.
