Physical DescriptionInstallation, "Liquid Sunshine / I am a Pluviophile". Colorless glass, phosphorescent crystal mixture, lights, motion detector, PLC (programmable logic controller). Installation fills a small, black-painted room with glass black floor. 223 blown glass drops of varying lengths hang from the ceiling. Each drop is studded with blue phosphorescent frit, representing raindrops imbued with sunshine. The piece is lit by bright lights, controlled by a motion detector. When the room is unoccupied, the lights turn on, charging the phosphorescent glass. The lights switch off when a visitor enters the room, triggering a motion sensor, leaving just the glowing outlines of the glass forms like phosphorescent jelly fish in the darkened ocean. As the viewer watches, the glowing glass begins to fade almost imperceptibly at first, until after several minutes, the piece becomes nearly dark.
