The silver lid is decorated with a medallion that portrays an ancient Greek priestess, known as the Samian Sibyl, who was said to have prophesized the birth of Jesus.
Physical DescriptionTankard. Colorless and opaque white glass, silver, gilding; blown and hot-worked glass with applied handle, reinforcement hoop, and foot; cast, chased, and partially gilt silver. Vetro a fili and vetro a retortoli, colorless glass with a pink tinge, with lattimo threads and bundles of twisted lattimo threads, cylindrical wall, tapering slightly towards the top, foot-ring blown from the mantle, high kick in base, upper reinforcement hoop and handle made of a single trail of colorless glass each; later mount: silver, parcel-gilt, cast and chased. The mount was added later to the tankard (circa 1700): the lid, which has a wavy rim, is decorated with a relief medallion on which the Samian Sibyl is portrayed holding an open book.
