Physical DescriptionTransparent deep ruby red very thick glass; wear marks at base; free-blown, engraved and cut (Hochschnitt and Tiefschnitt). (a) Eleven-sided straight-sided beaker slightly decreasing in diameter towards 11-sided foot with flat base and polished pontil mark; 11-sided slightly protruding rim section; (b) set-in conical cover with wide overhanging shoulder and solid ball knob; the object is heavily engraved in unpolished Tieschnitt while the top is heavily engraved in unpolished Hochschnitt; on the beaker is a very elaborate scene of a group of satyrs assaulting a group of nymphs in a landscape; starting with a satyr and a nymph dancing, there is a dog and dead fox near by; continuing towards the right against a background of bushes and trees there are four pairs of nude nymphs and satyrs; the first satyr tries to lift a struggling girl; the second pair, a satyr rushing toward the right to seize a second girl, the third group, a woman sits trying to struggle against an assaulting satyr who tries to shield himself with hand against the spear of an aggressive nymph, with a fourth nymph sitting in between; around the bottom and the top deeply cut leaf friezes; on the top of the cover, in Hochschnitt and unpolished leaf rosette, the finial has a scale pattern of leaves, around the shoulder another unpolished wreath of leaves; at the base on a polished pontil mark, a mirror monogram "T J A".
