Interpretive Notes
This pendant was found at Covehithe, Suffolk, in eastern England, in 1993. The ancient glass worker applied canes made from twisted threads of blue, white, and colorless glass to the amber glass cabochon, then set it in a gilded silver mount. Wear marks on the pendant’s loop indicate it was worn suspended from a chain or cord and was, perhaps, cherished by its owner for years before it was lost or buried.
Physical DescriptionPendant, "The Covehithe Pendant". Amber, blue, white, and colorless glass, twisted, applied, marvered; gilded silver. Oval amber glass cabochon with blue and white canes twisted around a colorless core. The z-twist canes are marvered into the surface of the cabochon in a hatched lattice pattern. The cabochon is set into an oval gilded silver mount with closed back, the edge of which is surrounded by a ring of granulation. At the top of the oval is a biconical gilded silver suspension loop with raised wire ornamentation.
