Physical DescriptionColorless; many small and some larger bubbles. Blown; cut; handle applied. Pitcher with globular body. Rim plain, with internal bevel; neck (Th. 0.45 cm) shaped like inverted and truncated cone; shoulder slopes and merges with wall, which curves smoothly down, out, and in; base plain; pontil mark probably removed and replaced by shallow circular depression (D. 2.1 cm) made by grinding. Handle attached to wall at greatest diameter, drawn up and over and in, and attached to rim and top of neck; at highest point, rectangular finial with sides parallel to sides of handle. Decorated on neck, shoulder, wall, and handle. On neck (from top to bottom), beginning and ending at sides of handle: band of eight contiguous vertical facets (H. 4.3 cm), each containing tongue-shaped element in relief; bottoms of tongues are attached to one another; below facets, horizontal grooves, two broad and one narrow. On shoulder and part of wall: two continuous shallow “steps,” which, opposite handle, are on shoulder, but curve down and out, and meet below handle attachment. On rest of wall: two horizontal rows of raised disks with countersunk knobs at centers; upper row contains six disks (D. about 2.6 cm) with rounded bosses (D. about 0.7 cm); lower row contains seven disks (D. about 2.8 cm) with rounded bosses (D. about 1 cm); at each end of upper row, in spaces between disks and lower “step,” raised crescentshaped element. On handle: outer surface and sides cut in four contiguous vertical facets, interrupted near bottom by horizontal notch with raised borders; facets continue on lower attachment, which is pointed.Provenance
