Interpretive Notes
Edouard Colonna produced several mounts for Tiffany vases, but this is the only mount known to survive. It features a type of enameling in the leaf-shaped peacock feathers known as Plique à jour (against the light). Normally, glass enamel is assembled on a metal ground. In Plique à jour, there is no metal ground, so the light shines through the enamel like a miniature stained-glass window.
Physical DescriptionFavrile Vase with Peacock Feather Plique à jour Mount. Translucent reddish glass, silver-gilt mount, Plique à jour enamel, rubies; blown, iridized. Small vase with bulbous lower body and long, thin, cylindrical neck. The body is decorated overall with golden iridescence in peacock trailings. A silver gilt mount encircles the long neck with ear-shaped plique-a-jour enamel decoration at the top and six rubies inset in various locations on the mount.
