Hot chocolate was an expensive luxury. It was usually served in a lidded cup to keep it warm, along with a glass of water and small pastries called sweetmeats.

Physical DescriptionSilver Tray with Sweetmeats Bowl. (a) Silver tray fashioned in the shape of a vine-leaf with raised rim and relief decoration in the form of leaf "veins" leading toward a long, winding stem that serves as a handle. The tray rests on three small feet. Three T-shaped locking pins are fixed to the top of the tray. (b) Oval, shell-like sweetmeat bowl, which rests upon a tall stem composed of foliate branches, which terminates in a circular foot with scalloped edge. Base of foot has small cut slot, which fits over locking pin on larger tray. (c) Silver socket fitted for glass beaker. Socket is decorated with "à jour" work in the form of engraved rococo ornament. Base of socket has small cut slot, which fits over locking pin on larger tray. (d) Silver socket fitted for two-handled porcelain cup. Socket is decorated with "à jour" work in the form of engraved rococo ornament. Circular insert with short wall fitted within socket. Base of socket has small cut slot, which fits over locking pin on larger tray.
