Physical DescriptionOpaque medium blue, opaque white and translucent green glasses with colorless chips and brown streaks; cast, lathe- and wheel- cut, applied, carved (cameo technique). Jug; short flaring rim profiled with concave band; tall slender neck, which widens at bottom and merges with wide, almost horizontal shoulder, rounded at edge; below this, wall curves down and in towards bottom; splayed footring with relief-cut band about 1 cm above bottom and narrow groove or step, 2 mm high, at edge; bottom of ring ground flat, interior tapers sharply inward with deep groove, 1 cm above bottom. Groove received flat disc of one or two layers of opaque white glass cased with opaque blue. Upper (interior) surface is uneven, with white appearing at edges; lower (exterior) surface cut to form elaborate profiled white band around edge with three concentric white grooves at center, surrounding blue boss. Handle formed of two thick coils of opaque light blue glass and translucent green glass cased with white, spirally twisted counterclockwise, applied to shoulder, pulled up, sharply angled and bent down to attach to neck. This is rectangular in section and sharply profiled. Upper portion has the relief-cut rectangles each cut with X. Lower portion has three vertical grooves above two raised horizontal bands on all four sides, and stepped molding at bottom. Below handle, extending downward from edge of shoulder, triangular opaque white applique with remains of opaque blue overlay, carved with four V-shaped grooves, one inside other. On shoulder, at roughly regular intervals, three more triangular white appliques. Each is isosceles, with narrow base towards neck, and is cut with one groove parallel to base and two grooves perpendicular to it. One retains trace of blue overlay.Provenance
