Physical DescriptionColorless lead glass; blown, diamond-point (scratch) engraved. Large ovoid bowl, covered with scratch-engraved decoration: three versions of the English Royal arms and the inscriptions "May those to whom this glass belongs / Light trials met (sic) if any / Their hours at Gloom may they be few / their sunny moments many"; "Wherever you dwell may content be your lot / and friendship like ivy encircle (sic) your Cot / may each rosey morn dressed in mantles of Peace / Shed health over your cottage your blessings / increase / may gay smiling plenty adorn the fair spot / May sorrow never enter the door of your Cot / May your honast (sic) endeavour be crowned with sucess (sic) / May you ever live happy never witness distress / On your cut (?) little roof may these blessings descend / Its a wish free from guile tis the wish of a friend"; "W H Hislop / 1850" and "to Chs Dickens"; the date "1850" also inserted between two of the coats of arms; heavy, short, capstan stem; disk foot, with scratch-engraved oak leaves and acorns on the upper surface; rough pontil mark.
