Physical DescriptionColorless lead glass; blown, diamond-point (scratch) engraved. Tapered, straight sides; sides with scratch-engraved decoration of the Royal English arms, flanked by sprays of oak leaves, roses, thistles, and shamrocks; lion supporter at the left, with Union Jack and pikes behind, holding down a banner inscribed "DIEU ET" with its right paw; a unicorn at the left, with flag and pikes, holding down a banner inscribed "DROIT" with its left leg; dated "1851" at the right; inscribed (script) below: "When friendship love and trouble are found/among a band of Brothers/ The cup of Joy goes gaily round/Each shares the Bliss of others/ Sweet rose's crown the thorny way/Along this vale of Sorrows/The flowers that shed their sweets today/Shall bloom again tomorrow"; to the right, another depiction of the Royal English arms, with banner across the shield inscribed "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE"; swaggered banner below inscribed "DIEU ET MON DROIT"; inscribed (script) below the arms: "May those to whom this glass belongs/ 'Light trails meet if any/Their hours of gloom may they be few/Their sunny moments many"; coat of arms with fleur-de-lis, lion passant, and bound sheaves of leaves, with eagle crest; crowns at either side; floral garland around the sides and bottom of the shield; blank ribband below; inscribed (script) below: "Art thou not dear unto my heart/Ah search that hart (sic) and see/And from my bosom tear the part/That beats not true to thee/Yes thou art dear unto my heart/More dear than tongue can tell/And if I am guilty of a fault/Tis loving thee too well"; flat base with polished pontil mark; scratched star and circles on the pontil mark.Provenance
