Interpretive NotesThe diamond-point engraved inscription around the rim of this goblet reads, "A Monsieur Gerard Bernsaw, Marchand à Eluerfeld.1684:le 12 [decem]bre:." It probably refers to a merchant in the German town of Elberfeld, which is now part of Wuppertal. The inscription on the foot is untidy and faulty, and it probably reads, "Monsieur Clauberg at fait le Desheun [Dessin?] a la Niercke le.12 [decem]bre.84." It may indicate that a Mr. Clauberg engraved the bowl.
